These maps are printouts of Vermont natural resources GIS data, at variable scales, on 11x17 paper. Most maps are in the neighborhood of 1:75000. The crossings are recorded as double-ended arrows, and their locations are based on reports from the public or Agency staff. It is assumed that the accuracy is highly variable, dependent upon the ability of the observer to determine where they were, the number of reference features on the map, etc. Each sighting is numbered and references information on the map as to the date, the observer, and other additional information. In several cases, a location may be flagged as having numerous individual sighted crossings. Data were developed using information recorded at the Springfield regional office of the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources. ANR's information was gathered by Forrest Hammond, Biologist with the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife. The purpose of these data are for regional-level analyses to locate and characterize the general nature of stretches of roads frequency crossed by bears. Data were digitized in ArcView by displaying those features shown in ANR's map as a background (roads, contours, wetlands, deeryards, surface waters, etc.), and visually placing a point at the location of a bear crossing. LIMITS ON DATA USE & INTERPRETATION These data should not be used to reference the exact location of an individual crossing. Instead, the intent of these data are for looking at regional, long-term trends. This coverage contains data for Windham County only.
