GIS Data for Halifax, Vermont

Halifax, crossroads of Windham County

This page lists data that are unique to the Town of Halifax, Vermont. These data were developed and/or updated by the Windham Regional Commission during 2002 as part of their Town Plan update process. Halifax had previous GIS data and maps for their 1994 Town Plan which have been updated with the help of the Halifax Planning Commission in 2002. GIS data have been developed primarily to support an update for Halifax's town plan map series. These data include things such as roads, structures, community facilities, and historic sites and homes.

There is currently no parcel data for the Town of Halifax, either in paper or GIS form.

The Halifax Historic Society did extensive research into the history and architecture of old homes in Halifax, and worked with the WRC to develop a Historic Sites and Homes database for Halifax, Vermont. The map contains the E911 point location of all 76 homes, plus the 10 sites and homes on the state register, as well as information including the name of the home, the approximate construction date, and (when available) the current owner name. The map was produced with shaded relief and cartography which will allow for the reproduction and sale of the map as a fundraiser for the Halifax Historic Society and in recognition of the unique and abundant history of the town of Halifax.

Additional VGIS data exist for Halifax. These data are generally produced on a state-wide basis and are available from the Vermont Center for Geographic Information, http://www.vcgi.org.

They are intended to portray the general hypsography of the area and should not be used to determine actual elevations. HISTAREA Historic areas This coverage contains historic areas in the Town of Halifax as identified by the Town. These areas do not coincide with any official historic area or district designation. The areas were mapped in the 1998 Halifax Town Plan and were digitized on-screen by WRC using 1:5000 VGIS base data. HISTSITE State and locally significant historic sites and homes This coverage contains the locations of historic sites on the state register in Halifax, Vermont as well as an additional 76 homes and sites that were deemed to be of local significance because of their history. The criteria used to identify these structures is: a structure built pre-civil war circa 1850, the significance of the person who lived in the home, and if the exterior is still true to the historic period. LESA Land evaluation/site assessment scores for farm parcels This coverage contains the results of a 1988 Land Evaluation and Site Assessment (LESA) study for Halifax. For each parcel analyzed, a point is included in this coverage that contains the LESA score and the parcel number. | VGIS documentation | [POINT coverage]

LU land use/land cover Contains land use/land cover interpreted 1:5000 Vermont orthophotos taken in 1989 and 1990. Land cover categories include forest, open (mixed uses), and agricultural. Agricultural land is further classified by using the agricultural lands map from the 1988 town plan maps, and from written descriptions for each of these parcels. NATAREA Town-identified natural areas This coverage contains point locations of natural areas in the town of Halifax. These points do not represent state or federally designated natural areas and are town identified only. RIVERCOR Riverine corridors This coverage contains riverine corridors as defined in the Halifax Town Plan. 500 foot wide corridors were mapped on each side of the Green River and the East Branch of the North River. ROADS99 Roads data Road centerline data for the Town of Halifax for the year 1999, updated by the Windham Regional Commission; includes road names, road classification, and road surfacing. STRUCT Structure locations (mimics ESITE) This coverage contains 911 building locations for the Town of Halifax, Vermont, edited by Windham Regional Commission so that the building points fall within the building footprint as shown on Vermont orthophotos.
