Marlboro base map

Overview
The Windham Regional Commission is undertaking a project to develop "base maps," or general purpose maps, for towns in the Windham Region. These base maps are intended to be used by a wide range of people, including town officials and the general public, for a variety of needs. At present, few towns have at their disposal a current, town-wide map showing structures, roads with road names, and other topographic features. The production of these base maps should fill this gap.

Description and Content
Topographic base maps are being prepared on a town-by-town basis. Full-size color versions of these maps are generally on the order of three feet square. A town-wide map will have a scale of 1:18000 (1 inch equals 1500 feet). Inset maps, used for villages or other densely developed areas, will have a scale of 1:10000 (1 inch equals 833 feet).

Topographic base maps contain a variety of data from the most up-to-date digitial sources available. Data on road location, class, and surface type has been updated with the cooperation of town officials. Road names represent those currently in place. Building locations have been captured using GPS as part of Vermont's Enhanced 911 mapping project, and in some cases their location has been edited and improved by WRC. Current parcel information is included when available. Other information includes surface waters, public and conservation lands, and generalized 50-foot contours.

These maps also contain data for portions of adjacent towns. We feel that this is important as it helps put each town in context with its surroundings. If we have not done extensive mapping in these adjoining towns, their data may be incomplete or out of date, however.

Cost
Copies of the large-scale color maps are $10.00 each.

Obtaining maps
Maps are plotted on an as-requested basis; we do not keep a supply on hand. Maps can be ordered by notifying Jeff Nugent. Maps must be picked up at the WRC office. Maps can be mailed, but they will be mailed folded!

The Town of Readsboro has been kind enough to maintain a limited supply of the Readsboro base maps at the town offices for the convenience of those living in the western part of the region. Check with the town (802-423-5405) for information on obtaining maps at that location.

The Town of Guilford distributes a reduced scale version (1:24000/1:13333) of the Guilford base map from the town offices. Contact the town (802-254-6857) for more information on availability and costs.
